Type | State owned government body and industry regulator |
The Central Electricity Generation Board is an agency of the Colonial Administration of Mars Socio-Economic Department with responsibility for the regulation, generation and transmission of electricity. The CEGB was founded in 2045 to address the need for a unified electrical grid on Mars, whilst the CEGB does not supply electricity directly to households the CEGB supplies electricity in bulk to both municipal utilities and larger private electrical utility corporations. The current Chairman of the Central Electricity Generation Board is James Sinclair, appointed in 2100.
All electricity generators used by the CEGB are AXIOM fusion reactors, and were installed by the private companies prior to nationalisation. Though new ones were installed during the early years of the Board before the revolutionary war.
History
Prior to the establishment of the Central Electricity Generation Board the generation and bulk supply of electricity to distributors was in the private sector, this lead to increased prices for the end user due to the cost of both generating and purchacing the electricity. There were three main generation companies prior to the establishment of the CEGB, they are:
- Rutherford Electric,
- Schiaparelli Utilities,
- and Nostrum Power
These companies were unified to form the CEGB by Decree #423 and nested under the Socio-Economic Department.
The Early Years (2045 - 2086)
This time was largley seen by many as a golden age for the CEGB, with an expansive power plant building and grid building project wiring up most of the planet in places where the private operators dared to tred. It was in this time that the CEGB was not faced with it's spirrodic power outages and incompetent governance that would come to plauge it in it's later years, this era of the Board saw the establishment of the National Grid and major construction of substations.
The first Chairman of the CEGB was Eric Jameson, and served from 2045 to 2088
The Revolution (2087 - 2095)
During the Martian Revolution the Infrastructure of the CEGB was attacked numerous times by commonwealth forces, resulting in widespread spirrodic power outages that required the implimentation of a Loadshedding policy, in order to prevent strain on the grid. The loadshedding policy was widely unpopular with both the colonial administration and the people which further increased the rate of attacks on CEGB substations and infrastructure.
In response to this, in 2088 Eric Jameson was fired and replaced with Clive Ericsson, whos reversal of the loadshedding policy directly aided the revolutionary effort at the expense of damaging the planetary transmission infrastructure. It was also during this time that Mr. Ericsson and other members of the Board's Executive Committee embezzled 1.2 Million Credits, this was only discovered post 2095 when Mr. Ericsson was swiftly fired by the newly established Minister of Electrical Supply.
Recovery (2095 - Present)
Post revolutionary war, the national grid was in a dire state of repair. Recovery efforts were started by the newly appointed Chairman, Christopher Hinton, himself a former employee of AXIOM Energy. The recovery efforts saw widespread investment into the electrical infrastructure of Mars that vastly superseeded the initial development when the CEGB was first established. The policy of loadshedding was re-introduced in order to facilitate the repairs to the network and by 2099 50% of Mars's major cities and districts were rewired to a pre-war level.
Though, due to the legacy of the revolutionary war much of the planet still faces spirrodic blackouts due to breakdowns in transmission infrastructure, however this is projected to be solved by 2190.
Organisation
The design, construction and development functions associated with power stations and transmission was undertaken by two divisions: the Generation Development and Construction Division based in Rutherford, and the Transmission Development and Construction Division based in Tharsis.
In 2095 the Transmission Division had been restructured as the Transmission and Technical Services Division, and a Technology Planning and Research Division was formed in Schiaparelli, the latter was formed from the System Technical and Generation Studies Branches.
Division Name | Director | Responsibility | Formed |
---|---|---|---|
Transmission and Technical Services | Edward Jameson | Operation of fusion reactors and maintinance of infrastrucutre | 2095 |
Generation Development and Construction | Richard Taylor | Construction of generation plants, development of generation infrastructure | 2045 |
Technology Planning and Research | Eric Dankworth | General research and development, implimentation planning | 2095 |
Supply and Industry Regulation | Tamatura Yori | Regulation of electrical supply companies, Bulk sale of electricity | 2045 |
The CEGB Executive Committee is the primary decision making body of the board, and is comprised of 10 members, 5 of which representing the private electrical supply company, the directors of the four divisions, and Chairman of the CEGB.
