Ships of the Sol Defence Corps

From SSRP

The Sol Defence Corps Navy operates and maintains hundreds of ships in active service. This page details the ships and ship classes that make up the the SDCN's vast naval component, alongside their specifications such as length and width, dry mass, acceleration, armament and crew complement.

SDC vessels are split into four designations:

  • SDCN (Navy) is used for commissioned warships.
  • SDCA (Auxiliary) is used for non-commissioned ships.
  • SDCX (Experimental) is used for prototype and experimental ships or craft.
  • SC is used for shuttles.

Commissioned vessels are armed warships designed for direct or indirect engagement against an enemy. Noncommissioned vessels are support craft that serve non-combat roles such as medical or cargo, and have a majority crew of civilian personnel.

FTL Capability

See: FTL

Usage of FTL is rare in Sol, however, and is typically only used for emergency response or for travel outside the Sol system. Vessels in the Hermes and Odysseus fleets are the first vessels to be fitted with any upgraded FTL technology developed by the SDC, followed by the rest. As a result, while the ships in main fleets such as Ares and Aegis Fleets can achieve superluminal travel, they are nowhere near as fast or efficient as those used by vessels in within the Hermes or Odysseus Fleets.

All FTL capable ships are equipped with two drives; their main set (with speed listed) and a backup FTL drive kept within the most well-armoured sections of the ship in the event the primary FTL fails, typically only capable of achieving 80c and decreasing in capability as vessel mass & size increases.

Capital Ships

Flag Carriers (FCV)

Carriers that act as flagships for their fleets, FCVs are the largest ships in the SDC, often measuring up to kilometres in length. These carriers are capable of deploying entire small corvettes as part of their carrier deployment along with hundreds of smaller shuttlecraft, bombers, dropships and fighters.

Space doctrine has transformed the role of a fleet carrier, doubling them as a mobile shipyards for fleet repairs and supplies. As a result, they are invaluable to naval battlegroups and serve an additional role in providing on-location logistical support far removed from friendly supply lines.

Class Prefix Type Description
Rome-class FCV Supercarrier The largest carrier class in the SDC. This massive, 1.2-kilometre flagship makes up one of the primary force projection components of the SDC and can carry two Switzerland-class corvettes in its hangar bays, compared to the one corvette carried by other SDCN flag carriers.

The Rome's fourteen strategic missile silos are normally loaded with nuclear missiles and act as one of the main elements of the UN nuclear deterrent against both domestic forces such as the nuclear powers of Earth, or any potential foreign threats. Rome-class vessels also host an immense airwing able to dwarf smaller terrestrial air forces and flatten any potentially threatening colony.

The only Rome-class ship — the SDCN Rome itself — is typically docked at a few large ports in orbit of Earth and Luna, with only a couple Solar System anchorages able to properly accommodate their bulk. Her crew is too large to ascribe social traits to, with the M8 division (Master At Arms) being known for occasionally providing commissioned nose art and other shipboard art pieces to vessels such as the Bulgaria-class.

The posterchild of the SDCN, the Rome was commissioned in 2091 with extra internal machine space built into her design as futureproofing, as naval architects of the time predicted faster-than-light travel might be rapidly approaching — a prediction vindicated by the first flight of the Escapade in 2100. The Rome-class is named after the Roman Empire, in an attempt by the SDC to choose a nation name without giving a member state of the UN the name of the largest carrier. The Roman Empire was chosen for their reputation.

Mexico-class The most traditional design among SDCN carriers, the Mexico-class was developed and launched in 2079 to fulfill increasing colonial power projection needs. Her hull was designed to fit within the largest pressurized shipyard of the time to benefit from the construction and repair efficiency of fully pressurized shipyards.

A quadruple strategic missile silo section allows the ship to launch nuclear or conventional warheads, adding to the United Nations ability to enforce its resolutions on the nations of Earth and the colonies of Sol. The Mexico-class' embarked air wing is only marginally smaller than that of the Rome-Class.

Not designed for FTL travel, the Mexico-class did not have internal space available for a larger FTL drive during the navy's FTL refit, and as a result it uses the same FTL drive as the Korea-class. Unsuited for the carrier's weight, its small and overburdened FTL drive can provide the Mexico-class only a sluggish speed during superluminal travel.

Like with other large capital ships there is no single culture onboard, though there is one prevailing mood across all departments within the only Mexico-class carrier, the SDCN Mexico. The crew of the Mexico are often in the same view as the Canada-class, being passed over for upgrades and budget increases in favor of the SDCN's Rome-class posterchild.

Greece-class Expeditionary carrier Only two Greece-class carriers exist, designed both as a last fallback in wartime and as a long-range support nexus for the Final Frontier Project, designed to operate similarly to the Ambassador-class as carriers of equipment, manpower, skill and long-range expeditionary capability.

Equipped with a miniature shipyard and necessary equipment, it is capable of repairing all but lethal battle damage to any vessel smaller than 500 by 500 metres, the ship's army of contract engineers can rebuild engines, Alcubierre drives, sensor arrays and even damaged ship spines.

The Greece-class' Lumicom array is the most powerful ship-mounted communications array ever designed, intended to provide a near-real-time datalink between all ships of the frontier and to maintain steady contact with Pluto and Earth. It has enough bandwidth to directly tie the ship's terminals, with some delay, into Sol-based supercomputing systems, lending the Greece-class an incredible simulation and analytical processing capability relative to the machine space dedicated to onboard computing.

Light Carriers (LCV)

Smaller in size than flag carriers, light carriers carry fewer craft and are more lightly armored, designed to keep up with smaller ships. The backbone of the SDCN's counter-insurgency and anti-piracy efforts, they operate early warning shuttle craft and strike craft to threaten pirates to surrender, as well as to destroy smaller insurgency forces. Despite their importance, they are often passed over for modernization efforts in favor of their more publicized and well-known flag carrier siblings.

Class Type Description Details
Canada-class LCV Light carrier The main light carrier of the SDC, the Canada-class is a dual-purpose vessel capable of fielding fighters, bombers, shuttles and drop ships. They can act as flagships providing command ability to small pirate and insurgent hunting groups and are capable of landing their marine detachments on planets to protect trade lanes, vital installations and orbiting capital ships.

Equipped with a variety of weaponry, the Canada-class is equipped for general peacekeeping operations. Its air wing, although similarly varied, is ideal for counter-insurgency operations with armed shuttles able to intercept suspected pirate ships and widen sensor reach while Phoenix fighters target and destroy converted warships or suicide drones.

Often unsung heroes, Canada-class crews are not as respected as Rome-class or Mexico-class carriers. They find this reputation to extend to the realm of military politics and high brass as well, their effective ships constantly fighting budget cuts and cancelled modernization, resulting in a rather jaded and abrasive view of the SDCN and wider system.

Algeria-class Expeditionary light carrier A strange form of "carrier", the Algeria-class has very little aviation facilities and is only barely able to support itself, let alone a larger strike wing for attacking. Rather, the Algeria-class is a support ship itself in the SDCN's octopus exploration doctrine, fielding more advanced laboratories than the Korea class and the Ambassador class.

Although very lightly armed for a ship of its size, with its sole dual 100mm cannon specially modified to act as a point defence weapon, the Algeria-class acts as a cornerstone for the Final Frontier Project being a command post for flag personnel, a roving laboratory complex, and a recreational centre. They are equipped with the only bar on FFP ships outside of the Ambassador-class as well as a direct Lumicom link to Earth for near-real time communication with family members. Essentially, they are morale and logistics keystones for far-flung FFP crews, often berthed on spartan and lightweight science vessels months from home.

The crews are no strangers to gossip and an exceedingly complex web of relationships, betrayals and friend groups, often taking advantage of the on board recreation facilities. With so many amenities, Algeria-class vessels are a very desirable posting for FFP personnel not quite interested in the wider exploration of the galaxy and desiring a somewhat comfortable berthing away from the clamor of Sol's crowded orbits.

Battleships (BBS)

The rise of long-distance space warfare has once again given rise to the illustrious battleship, heavily-armed capital ships carrying incredible quantities of armament. They often carry the largest guns, the most missiles, and are capable of laying waste to the face of a planet — often known affectionately as "perks", for "planetary remodeling kits".

During planetary campaigns, battleships can also act as bombers, shelling planetary surfaces with strategically placed railcannon strikes in a heavy fire support role.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
United States-class BBS Fast battleship The most recent wholly new design commissioned by the SDC, the United States-class fast battleship, colloquially known as the US-class or the America-class, takes her linage from the older Iowa battleships, featuring a design more intended for orbital bombardment and torpedo carrying than front line combat — essentially a flying strategic and tactical ordnance platform.

The United States-class focuses its armour to the keel (belly) of the ship, with its guns mounted on the sides so they can swivel and engage targets on a planet while the ship places its thickest amour to the enemy. As well, the United States-class is equipped with SDMC facilities which allow for rapid deployment of troops to the surface of planets. The SDCN United States is equipped with FTL drives to act as fast response vessels to rapidly emergent threats within Sol and to be ready in the event an extrasolar threat such as if a rogue colony were to appear.

The crew of the United States-class battleship are often unremarkable, with diverse personel and well behaved officers — an unattractive target for the naval gossip mill. They act as shining beacons of how to behave and are highly sought after postings due to the modern amenities onboard as fast network connections, larger berths, and higher quality galleys.

Bharat-class HBS Heavy battleship Powerful but slow, Bharat-class battleships are formidable vessels that make up substantial amounts of the SDC's total firepower, forming a battle group's main artillery and damage dealer in line warfare. Equipped primarily with notoriously powerful quad gun turrets, it provides heavy artillery capable of smashing the thickest of armour.

The Bharat-class is often scrutinized by military and budgetary analysts for their existence — questioning why the SDCN, a force currently focused on customs, law enforcement, and counter-insurgency deployments, maintains such heavily armed frontline combat vessels to full strength in a time of general system peace.

Despite their size, Bharat-class battleships are often rather miserable postings, with poor amenities and aggressive officers, they are bottom of the barrel when it comes to berth desirability. Crew often dread postings to Bhaat-class ships, and they are often considered the bottom of the barrel in SDC enlisted rankings — cramped, aging, and crewed by generally inexperienced personnel.

Terra-class BBS Legacy Battleship The first battleship class of the then-newly founded SDC, intended more as a proof of concept of what a space battleship would look like than a true purpose-built combat vessel. Only three of its kind were constructed, and only one remains in active service — SDCN Terra. While large relative to present-day vessels, SDCN Terra remains a legacy commissioned ship of the SDC used to train officers, cadets and upper enlisted.

Designed with an atmosphere-efficient yet lightly armored tube design, like the ships of her era (2060s-2090s), the Terra-class has a specialized armored artificial gravity centrifuge, as the ship lacks modern artificial gravity systems. Originally equipped with a chemical-electric propulsion system, the Terra-class was upgraded in 2076 to remove the chemical fuel and drive assembly, replaced with a modern fusion reactor and plasma/ion drive system. A solar sail was incorporated into the initial design due to political meddling, but was never practically used.

All officers and NCOs before 2103 all served on the SDCN Terra itself as part of their standard training schedules — the ship itself does not host a long-term or permanent complement.

The other two mothballed Terra-class vessels are kept up to date and well-maintained should they be needed urgently in wartime.

Line Ships

Cruisers

Cruisers are the most versatile ships of a battlegroup, and can take on many roles. Larger than a destroyer but smaller than a battleship, they possess large amounts of armament and carry the minium facilities needed to lead a fleet.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Japan-class BCR Battlecruiser Effectively a miniature battleship, Japan-class cruisers are heavily armed and often join battleships in operations that directly engage enemy craft. Despite this it does not carry heavy armour like its battleship counterparts.

Intended to act as a fast moving flagships to chase down fast moving and dangerous pirates, insurgents and criminals. Equipped with specialist gun-director stations which can guide naval artillery fire with passive IR or visual locks or with RADAR, providing nigh unjammable targeting sensors and pinpoint gun accuracy.

Like other capital ships, Japan-class crews often have little combat experience as it would be too costly to constantly deploy these heavy ships and when they do deploy, criminals tend to act innocent.

Halcyon-class Expeditionary Battlecruiser Commissioned as the bulwark of the Odysseus fleet, the specially made Halcyon-class is the zenith of the Odysseus fleet's heightened armament doctrine - two railcannon turret batteries, a missile interceptor array comparable to cruisers and a robust laser point defence system alongside eight torpedo tubes and the colossal Ryomen Dynamics "Wormwood" mounted railcannon, on top of bleeding-edge EWAR hardware, the Halcyon-class is one of the most powerful classes within the SDC, and remains a battlecruiser instead of a battleship purely as a result of bureaucracy and size. It is also one of the only ships to break the naming convention.

Only one Halcyon-class exists, the SDCN Halcyon, which remains in drydock at SDCSS Proxima at nearly all times. The Halcyon exists as a deterrent to hostilities towards the ships of the Odysseus fleet (after the existing fleet of expeditionary destroyers and other retrofitted destroyers and frigates) that can quickly mobilise in the event of hostilities in the extrasolar frontier. A second Halcyon-class is currently in construction at Arkature Shipyards in Jovian orbit as a complement to the SDCN Halcyon, and is soon to be done.

Ambassador-class HCR Expeditionary Heavy Cruiser A unique, long-distance expeditionary cruiser designed for long-range missions outside the operating range of most SDC craft, commissioned as the modern-day backbone of the Final Frontier Project. Notably, Ambassador-class vessels receive far more luxurious facilities than standard naval vessels due to their long-term deployments.

Ambassador-class ships are rare, with only two in active service, Ambassador and Emissary, with a third and fourth in production (Diplomat and Envoy) with planned construction to be completed in 2118. They are equipped with extensive aviation facilities, fleet replenishment utilities such as auxiliary fuel tanks, additional weapons stores and a large cargo bay as well as an extensive suite of scientific and medical facilities. all protected with an advanced theatre level sensor package able to track contacts at distances before they threaten the ship.

An extension of the "octopus doctrine" of the Final Frontier Project, they act as the base of the tentacle, performing resupply and logistics duties to the further out vessels and providing wider research and scientific capabilities. Acting like a mobile FOB, The Ambassador-class is usually sent to planets and systems of particular interest or strategic positions.

United Kingdom-class GCR Guided Missile Cruiser / Escort Cruiser The original guided missile cruiser, the United Kingdom-class, was developed and first launched in 2086, only a few years before the Martian Revolution, and it only saw limited combat as few had finished their trials. Designed as a dedicated fleet escort to protect against light craft attacks such as missile boats, fast attack craft, both conventional (like the Iranian Farrbāz-class) and improvised (like later Martian Revolutionary ships).

Equipped with an advanced AESA radar, it relies on proven technologies like RADAR to track and plot incoming craft and missiles. Taking this data, a highly advanced AI developed by Gansai Industries (named SPACE-GUARD) calculates the threat level and advises the crew to fire or not fire. The crew then makes the final decision. The system can be automated so that no crew is needed, and in theory, the whole ship can be operated entirely via AI. However, doing so hampers the ship's suitability and can cause unpredictable behaviour to go unchecked.

Crews of United Kingdom-class ships often don't ever see battle as pirates tend to avoid these unwinnable situations. As a result, they foster a more social atmosphere, with reports of secret maintenance tunnel bars and ship-paint across the decks.

Germany-class Germany-class escort cruisers are the baseline cruiser for most of the SDC's fleet. Agile, versatile and deadly, they can be fielded as the capital ships of small strike groups or as dedicated counters to carriers, missiles or torpedoes and fast attack craft. Designed to supplement the England-class with wider capabilities.

Equipped with further developments in both anti-stealth RADAR filtering and a small hangar bay for light craft, the Germany-class has batteries of vertical launch cells loaded with specialist interception missiles. These missiles are designed to act as a intermediary between a PDM missile and a torpedo. Her primary targets are light attack craft often used by pirates, terrorists and rebels, alongside regular military use of fast attack craft like the North Korean Cheonji-class.

Unlike the England-class, the Germany-class was produced post Martian Revolution after lessons learned from the England-classes deployment, this means that although also not battle tested, crews of the Germany-class are better trained and have higher average morale than their counterparts.

Only one Germany-class has been modified for FTL travel but was lost on her maiden flight due to welding faults, with fortunately no casualties as such a disaster was predicted likely and thus the ship was remote controlled. However there are rumours that this is not the case and that the vessel was stolen by pirates.

Destroyers

Destroyers form the largest amount of ships in the fleet. These vessels are capable of performing equally as well solo as in a battle group. These are frequently dispatched for counter piracy operations or patrols throughout the Sol system.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Turkiye-class DDS Expeditionary Destroyer An offshoot of the France-class destroyer retrofitted for EXCOM duties. It was produced as a compromise between the production of a brand new class of ship, which would be expensive, and the lack of offensive capability for the 6th fleet.

Most of the changes to the France-class that went into the Turkiye-class were the extension of the ship's hull and engine chamber to account for a self-sufficient Alcubierre drive and the addition of a laboratory and specimen containment system. While the expansion of the engine chamber was not a major physical change, the changes to internal structure resulted in some strange passageways within the ship making navigating exceedingly difficult for those used to the France-class floor plan.

Often given crews of France-class ships, multiple captains, first officers and even lower enlisted report significant difficulties navigating the strange floor plan often resulting in irritable and exhausted crews. The relatively "slapped on" approach to the design also results in loud noisy crew cabins during FTL further worsening crew morale and irritability.

France-class Multirole Destroyer A versatile and lightweight destroyer and the most numerous ship class in the SDC, It is designed as the mainstay escort craft of the SDCN, posting on trade lines they manage the ever present pirate issue and apprehend or destroy pirate ships that stray into their attention.

Equiped with mostly missile weapons, the France-class has a VLS array which can sport multiple types of specialized 600mm torpedo. Intended to fight other warships or over match against insurgents, and has a small shuttlebay for two S-10 "Gripon" shuttles to chase non compliant pirates.

Crews are run of the mill, with good standings and varied backrounds. They are notable in the fact that there is nothing notable about them at all.

Ethiopia-class A slower but well armoured destroyer, able to block all small-arms such as 20mm and 12.7mm (Commonly used by pirates and merchants to deter ships from attacking) the Ethiopia-class is a specially built anti-pirate destroyer.

Part of organized strikes against pirate coves, mother ships and escort missions as an "offensive defender", the Ethiopia-class' railcannons are able to fire special net rounds, which ensnare and apply either an EMP or a tracking beacon. There is also a special version of the net which leaves a UV reactive paint for later identification.

With the highest contingent of utterly deranged captains, Ethiopia-class captains are well known for charging head first into battle, showing their ballistic armament's worth. Their crews often having such a gung-ho attitude alongside their commanding officers.

China-class ADS Amphibious Destroyer A from-the-ground built SSTO capable destroyer (although technically classed as a landing ship), the China-class is designed to take the fight to the enemy, equipped with an advanced VTOL system allowing temporary hovering within an atmosphere, which allows its ludicrously sized ordinance projector to cast monstrously sized bombs at the foe. It is also capable of landing on a planet to offload troops and equipment, though such landings are prohibited during peacetime due to unnecessary stress.

Its VTOL system is a set of eight rockets on four corners of the frame of the ship, with each pair the backup of itself as each nozzle is capable of twice normal power. This allows the ship to operate much closer to the ground and provide direct fire support for marines with improved accuracy. It's specialized purpose is reflected in its armour package or lack thereof with all armour focused around the engines and an automatic return to orbit computer system should all command and control be lost.

Captains of the China-class are often pulled from marine ranks due to the required experience in ground operations and are specially trained by SDAC pilots on missile evasion due to the significant threat of ground-based anti-ship fire.

Gibraltar-class TDS Torpedo Destroyer A specialised destroyer carrying volleys of torpedoes and missiles, using ambush tactics to destroy enemy craft. Fast, agile, and lethal, Gibraltar-class destroyers additionally come with limited stealth capabilities to emphasize their aggressive doctrine.

Its special 800mm Torpedo canisters are able to carry advanced anti-ship missiles, capable of carrying heavy warheads and decoy launchers to evade point defense. There is also a special version with an integrated FTL drive for extreme range strikes.

A rather timid set of captains and crews, they are aware of their ships deficiencies in close range combat, and tend to be inexperienced in combat. Their ships stay in port most of the time due to the lack of targets for their torpedoes. Some ships are equipped with FTL for deployment with the 6th Fleet.

Serbia-class SDS Stealth Destroyer A unique Stealth Destroyer in use by the SDC, using several methods such as carbon nanotube black paint and electromagnetic radiation masking to evade detection by the enemy, often paired with Vietnam-class frigates for scouting and intelligence operations. Designed in the runup to the Martian Revolution, the Serbia-class was designed for one purpose: to dominate space.

It relied on dated understandings of warfare which placed stealth over all, and while it worked for its time, it is lacking compared to theoretical contemporary stealth ships. However, due to the primary focus of the SDCN on counter-insurgency, anti-piracy and exploration missions it has not seen the need for a new stealth ship. As a result, the Serbia class is slated to remain in service until the 2130's.

Often being used as the ultimate counter to irregular military forces and some pirate operations, the Serbia-class and its crews often find themself with on paper large amounts of combat experience, but with little actual learned from their missions. Despite this, crews are often acutely aware of the limitations of their cloaking drive.

Frigates

Frigates are similar in size to destroyers, however they are distinguished from destroyers by having more support and niche specialisations than destroyers.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Kazakhstan-class FFG Frigate Designed as a replacement and later supplement to the Finland-class, the Kazakhstan-class was produced to replace older frigates and destroyers in a consolidated vessel, applying modern missile interception tactics and law enforcement capabilities into one ship. The result was an over-budget and over-engineered ship that performed its duties exceptionally well, despite critics comparing it to the American M5 Lincoln tank, Russian SU-57 Felon program and the earlier Finland-class.

Intended to help enforce law and order in the Sol system, the Kazakhstan-class is equipped with a shuttle bay, enlarged brig, and special laser systems to disable, capture, and apprehend pirates, terrorists, and other members of the criminal class.

Being over-engineered means personnel often attribute the Kazakhstan-class with Germany, and as such, attach stereotypes. However, this is far from the truth, with crews often hailing from Africa and some captains being picked from former pirate groups to help in their mission. Crews often find their ships to be worth the effort in maintenance due to their exceptional capabilities for their weight class.

Finland-class The first "flat hull" designed ship in the SDC, produced after the Ontario-class, it was, to quote the movie York Wars:

"A frigate the size of a destroyer, an enforcement ship with the brig of a corvette, an attack frigate with the weapons of a cruise liner, and the armor of a garden shed. Couple more years, and they'll get this thing to go faster than light."

Designed to enforce space law for the still-growing United Nations, it aimed to achieve what was not technologically possible at the time, representing an overly ambitious project, particularly with unproven technologies like artificial gravity and inertial dampeners.

The crews of these ships often develop a distrust for the UN and their respective commands, frequently tasked with handling some of the worst individuals in the system using equipment with questionable reliability. This distrust intensified after the Martian Revolution, during which multiple Finland-class ships were lost due to equipment failures or incompetent command, leading to mutinies and non-combat losses. These incidents contributed to the failure during the First Battle of the Blockade.

The Republic of Finland filed a formal protest, expressing their perception of injustice in having their name associated with what they referred to as 'such a disgrace of a vessel and class'.

Vietnam-class RFG Reconnaissance Frigate A frigate with advanced sensor and reconnaissance technology, the Vietnam-class ships are often deployed to scout out areas or map out sectors in advance for the rest of its battle group.

Equipped with multiple massive sensor arrays, it is equipped to track large targets above a kilometer in size moving faster than light at distances of up to a light-year, as well to track ships within Sol, taking advantage of the fact that stealth is nigh impossible without dedicated tools, equipment and know how.

Crews of these ships are often battle tested as they become prime targets for budding terror groups, and established pirates wanting to claim the sensors for themselves. These crews take great pride in their ships and are not afraid to show their battle scars or their comradery.

Some ships have been modified with FTL drives over the years to help supplement 6th Fleet and EXCOM.

Korea-class SFG Science Frigate A small, expeditionary frigate unique to EXCOM and the 6th fleet, designed to function as a mobile laboratory under the Final Frontier Project. It is intended as a supplement to the Escapade-class.

Equipped with advanced laboratories similar to those of the Ambassador-class, the Korea-class lacks the longevity of her heavier sisters but compensates by operating as an arm in the 'octopus doctrine' of the Final Frontier Project. It travels to distant medium-priority worlds, using its small complement of shuttles to recover samples.

Crews of the Korea-class are often on shorter and more temporary assignments due to their short-term missions. Many join for pay bonuses, seeking adventure without as much sacrifice or testing the waters before committing to a longer 6th Fleet assignment. As a result, the crews are diverse.

Corvettes

Corvettes form the smallest proper ship class, one step above a shuttlecraft. These vessels are often piloted by a minimal crew and mostly serve as either picket or scout vessels, with some being highly specialised.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Bulgaria-class HSC Heavy Corvette A heavy corvette designed for both patrol and convoy escort, these ships are moderately armed and armored, often forming the majority of guard patrols throughout the system, with some being assigned to escort high-value civilian cargo or passenger vessels, often carrying SDMC marines or NAVSOC operators.

Often nicknamed 'Black Tulips,' they rarely survive pirate encounters, at least not without significant damage. This would imply the vessel is under-equipped for even the most basic anti-piracy tasks, but in reality, it is an example of survivorship bias. Most pirates, insurgents, and terrorists, when planning a raid, will attempt to factor in potential SDCN forces and plan accordingly. As a result, either no battle happens, or it is stacked against the Bulgaria-class.

Despite this, like the Switzerland-class, it has a strong class culture, with it common to have every crew member paint their name onto the hull of the ship, as well as 'nose art,' which appears on ships in the outermost regions of UN space.

There is a plan to upgrade all Bulgaria class ships to include FTL by 2120.

Escapade-class HSC Exploration Corvette A legacy design, the Escapade-class is an SDCX (experimental) craft known for being the first ship type equipped with an FTL drive. Lightly armoured and with next to no weaponry, the ship was intended only as a testbed for FTL travel; however, the FFP had taken custody of the class and used several as the first vessels of the project.

The Escapade now serves as a museum ship preserving scientific history and makes annual voyages to celebrate the landing of humans on the moon in 1969, her crew a group of volunteers working around the clock to keep the ship functioning and presentable.

Pilgrimage-class SPC Special Purpose Corvette The modernized iteration of the old Escapade and her sister ships, it is the errand runner of the SDCN. Almost all are operated by the 6th Fleet, varying with onboard equipment and systems dependent on the mission they were intended for, from lethal biohazard research to humble parts ferrying. Despite this hyper-specialization, the listed statistics for the class are valid across all ships.

The varied histories and designs of the Pilgrimage-class make each ship unique in its own regard, from troop transports joint commanded by the SDMC and SDCN to vessels operated entirely by Earth militaries under the UN Peacekeepers Corps. Some run cargo between Earth and its colonies, others act as mobile police stations to enforce colonial law, and some don't exist on paper.

Hammerhead-class GPC General Purpose Corvette The Hammerhead class, a purpose-built FTL-capable ship, was designed to support outer colonies and outposts before the widespread adoption of FTL technology. As a result, its FTL drive leaves something to be desired, with 'Hammerhead Syndrome' becoming a common affliction among the crews of these ships due to near-total isolation and limited space within the vessels.

This has resulted in an unusual effect, where crews often become paranoid or depressed when in large, open spaces, frequently reporting close encounters with aliens, monsters, and, reportedly, even a 'killer spider'—none of which have been discovered or confirmed.

After the publishing of 'Space Warfare 2200,' the Hammerhead-class has seen new life as one of the UN's few Dedicated Anti-Stealth Warfare (AStW) platforms, being equipped with deployable magnetic, gravitational, and improved POLEGER arrays.

Switzerland-class ESC Escort Corvette A small corvette class, often deployed as an attachment to a carrier. Extremely nimble and armed to the teeth with point defence systems and missiles, the Switzerland-class serves as a last-ditch escort and protection craft for larger vessels. Similar to the Bulgaria-class, these corvettes have a strong subculture among the ships, featuring vibrant colours and crew rituals.

The large crew is primarily intended for damage control, serving as a last-ditch defense under doctrine. Due to the relatively dangerous mission profile of the Switzerland-class putting it in close proximity to debris from intercepted missiles and torpedoes, the crew is trained to replace sensitive sensor equipment on the fly during battle while also plugging holes in the hull and battling fires. As well under doctrine Switzerland-class corvettes are able to be used as battering rams against enemy craft threatening the high value target, using its high speed and wide hull as a improvised missile.

Model Type Description Details
Phoenix Remodel.png
F/A-307 "Phoenix"
Space Fighter A special-purpose spaceborne fighter intended to attack small vessels or ground targets, perform reconnaissance of high-value targets, and provide defensive screening to fleets or bases. Built like a traditional multirole 'fighter jet'

The 'high' to the F/A-301's 'low', the Phoenix is equipped with superior RCS arrangement in comparison with the Manta, with 'thruster pods' on its wings allowing unfettered manoeuvrability in a vacuum. Though, the Phoenix has significantly higher weight and size, and performs worse in atmospheric conditions.

The Phoenix is the main fightercraft of the Sol Defense Aviation Corps, seeing limited use in UNPK Air Force Service due to its size and expense in comparison to the Manta.

Support Vessels

Distinct from the Sol Defence Corps Auxiliary, The support vessels directly under the SDCN are meant to act as frontline supply, tenders and tankers directly with the combat fleets of the SDCN. Intended to operate under the direct command of admirals and commodores, they will sail with their armed sisters and brothers to provide either logistical or utility support in either communications, sensors, command and control or even scientific purposes should a dedicated ship not be available.

Despite being only one step away from the frontlines, support ships often are poorly armed due to their specialization. To combat this they are equipped with the same ECM systems as their warship brethren and are typically kept away from the actual fighting.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Denmark-class STT Supply Tender The main supply ship of the SDC, ferrying food, cargo, and other supplies between ports of call and ships underway. The Denmark-class is equipped with two large docking arms to allow the vessel to dock and transfer supplies while underway. Additionally, it has a shuttle hangar to enable rapid cargo transfer, although it lacks the necessary support facilities to operate its own airwing.

One of the last 'cigar-style' ships, she does not come with a gravity generator or the more modern 'flat' hull design, instead relying on the thrust from the engines to provide gravity. This has given the ship the nickname 'bearing' due to captains often making circular manoeuvres to maintain thrust gravity while minimizing movement.

The lack of gravity hampers cargo transfer processes, as the ship cannot move when launching or receiving shuttles, and traditional styles of moving cargo (cable cranes and forklifts) become either unusable or extremely difficult to use. The mass of cargo often makes it impossible to move by hand. Despite this, it is still maintained within the SDCN because of its simple design and minimal age-related cost increases.

Panama-class STS Stealth Ship Tender A purpose-built craft made alongside the development of the Serbia-class, the Panama class is a specialist repair and resupply tender for the SDCN's mainstay stealth ships. Specially designed with a large empty bay in the centre of the ship flanked by two crew bulges, it is capable of maintaining the specialist stealth equipment of the Serbia-class.

Its central hangar/drydock can be pressurized and is sealed with two large doors and two hardlight barriers. It has only one crane but is equipped with a powerful gravity generator, which allows much easier movement of components, cargo, and supplies to and from. The ship also features a powerful computer array to recalculate stealth features as part of a recent upgrade program to prolong the Serbia-class's capabilities and superiority.

Crews of the Panama-class are often the most scrutinized by internal investigations due to their proximity to the sensitive components, paints, coatings, and even shapes that make up the Serbia-class. Despite this, they are often praised by the crews of Serbia-class ships who rely on them not just for supplies and repairs but also for rest, news of the outside world, and even contraband.

Venezuela-class RFT Re-Fueling Tender A specialist refueling tender for the SDCN, the Venezuela-class carries liquid fuel, oxidizer, xenon, hydrogen, tritium and all the other various fuels both liquid and gaseous used by the SDCN. One of the first modern-style ships with a "flat hull", the Venezuela-class suffers from being an early adopter, with some strange design choices such as random segments of the ship without gravity, and equipment pleaded sideways in their mounts.

Her large fuel tanks are armoured to protect them from shrapnel and micro-meteorite impacts. TheVenezuela-class has four fueling arms to connect to up to four ships, and a shuttle bay for transferring of light cargo like mail, food and small bulk items.

Due to common misconceptions caused by TV shows and films like "The Passport", crews of other ships tend to feel nervous when operating near a Venezuela-class because of a perceived threat of explosion. This often leads to more rebellious crewmembers of various Venezuela-class ships to paint slogans on the hull such as "Be scared of the sun if you're scared of me" and "It is just a little water". These slogans are disliked by the admiralty who see them as inflammatory and unprofessional. Despite this, they still appear now and again, a reminder of how little ships are seen from the outside.

Non-commissioned Vessels

Non-commissioned vessels (prefix SDCA) are auxiliary support ships staffed by civilian support personnel (and sometimes military), intended for non-combat operations undertaken by the fleet. Operated by the SDCA (Sol Defence Corps Auxiliary), they often find themselves under-funded due to requiring expensive ships to perform necessary duties, which can be confusing for politicians who believe that austerity is the solution. All officers in the SDCA post-Martian Revolution are vetted before being allowed to handle munitions due to incidents of corruption before and during the war. This gives the SDCA an often poor reputation among UN supporters, with the common insult 'turncoat navy' being used to belittle crews, not helped by questionable recruiting practices.

All ships of the SDCA are capable of being modified in wartime to support full-scale ship-mounted weapons (although extremely limited in actual effectiveness and quantity), as well as the SHUTTER remote weapon system. SHUTTER was originally developed for colonial defense using either wirelessly or wire-controlled turrets that were operated from a container modified to carry computers and terminals. This system was modified to use semi-permanent magnets, allowing wired turrets to be magnetized to the hulls of ships and controlled from a makeshift CIC.

Class Prefix Type Description Details
Kenya-class A-CGV Combination Carrier A dual bulk carrier and container ship, it is staffed with civilian personnel and ferries supplies between ports within Sol. It is integrated with cargo cranes to assist loading and unloading in ports with gravity but otherwise poor infrastructure. Although plans for upgrading the Kenya-class to include FTL drives were proposed, it was officially rejected due to cost concerns.

Four of the fifteen Kenya-class ships have been modified to allow SSTO/VTOL take-off and landing capability, intended to provide logistical aid to SDMC and UNPK forces. Heat shields and landing gear have been installed alongside the vertically pointing chemical rockets.

Crews of these ships are notorious for poor behaviour as they are often picked from the bottom of the barrel. Ex-convicts, opportunists, and easily corrupt individuals often make up the crews. It is not uncommon for ships to be called for duty, only for a percentage of the crew to end up deserting or going AWOL.

Ireland-class A-FCG Interstellar Transport/Ferry/Troop Transport Ship An FTL-capable interstellar SDC vessel that can carry both crew and passengers on journeys outside the Sol system. Commonly used in resupply operations to and from the UN's remote colonies, it has enough passenger space for 200 passengers, 100 in a cryosleep configuration or in wartime can support 600 troops including cryosleep, with enough cargo space for years worth of supplies or a Marine Expeditionary Battalion's equipment. as well as shuttle facilities for cargo shuttles.

The cryosleep system was developed due to the long distances involved in journeys from sol to the outermost colonies, however early testing showed it to be inefficient for shorter journies, and as a result, the system is often removed when travelling to closer planets. Each cabin is equipped with amenities only found on cruise ships to help ease the isolation and claustrophobia.

The crews of these ships are the most scrutinised due to their important roles in logistics and supplying of extra-solar colonies as very few civilian owned ships can even reach outer colonies with less still travelling between them. They are also found by independent reviews to be highly corrupt, charging high prices to smuggle personal items from Earth to colonies and back.

Paraguay-class A-HS Hospital Ship A large, purpose-built hospital ship, Paraguay-class vessels are often deployed to both stations and to planets to provide aid and relief. In addition to SDC service, the UNPK operates two of these ships for Earth-based aid and relief missions.

One of these ships has been modified for FTL travel, the SDCA Congo, intended to follow new colony constructions when hospital infrastructure is not available beyond basic facilities on warships. Providing capabilities like cancer treatment, radiation treatment and extensive recovery facilities. alongside the ability to receive shuttles for transferring of patients.

Often common sights in disaster areas on Earth, three of the four Paraguay -class ships remain on or near earth responding to various disasters like earthquakes, floods and hurricanes. They have gained a positive reputation among civilian populations, with on multiple occasions pirates and insurgents refusing to attack due to the respect they have for their crews.

Austria-class A-SVV Navigational Survey Ship The most expensive ships in the UN government by tonnage, the Austria-class, are equipped with specialist RADARs, observatory telescopes in both visual and IR spectrums, a supercomputer to filter and process data, and specialist communications equipment to correlate with stationary facilities. With an ultra-powerful laser, the Austria-class is capable of detecting and tracking micro-meteorites, then either updating star charts or destroying them. The Austria-class Navigational Survey Ship is responsible for monitoring these hazards and, if necessary, removing them.

Equipped with two specialist 'CATCHER' shuttles for the collection of space junk threatening constantly evolving shipping lanes, and an ultra-high-power and highly focused laser emitter at the very front of the ship known as the 'High Energy Focused Laser,' it uses the most powerful model of laser emitter ever built to vaporize micro-meteorites over hours. Able to pan across space, it is designed to focus its beam on a rough point in space, allowing for safety down-range and to help expedite the process.

Although depicted in media such as the show 'Quirky Bandits,' the HEFL cannot be used as a weapon, as its beam is not pulsed, meaning it cannot defeat standard laser defences such as specialized armour platings. Despite this, it still provides an extremely vibrant light show as navigational hazards vaporize and create an almost visual static in space. Nine of these ships operate, with three almost always deployed.

Belgium-class A-TCV Communications Relay Ship A long-distance communications relay ship operates in conjunction with relay satellites, regulating and transmitting information between ships, ports, and planetary commands. It represents a relatively new class of civilian ships that have begun performing supply runs between Sol and the closest colonies. This class coordinates an expanded anti-piracy/law enforcement effort and assists in communications among the 6th fleet. They find service in both the SDCA and SDCN due to the varying communication needs of both civilian and military ships and installations.

Equipped with two large Long Wave Lumicom arrays, the Beligum-class can both transmit and receive ultra-fast long-wave tachyons sent by Sol-based communication facilities. It also plays a pivotal role in UN cybersecurity and cyberwarfare, acting as a firewall between fleets, installations, and outposts. Given the SDCN's hyper-networking capabilities, allowing ships to be remotely controlled from devices as simple as a smartwatch, cybersecurity is taken very seriously, with networks quarantined to prevent a single virus from crippling the entire SDC.

These ships often find themselves alone in deep space with no stars or planets, resulting in severe isolation. To combat Hammerhead Syndrome, Belgium-class ships are often given special privileges regarding personal items, pets, crew uniforms, and family provisions. Despite these measures, it is still not uncommon for crews to return after years in space mentally changed, more accustomed to contact with other people via a computer screen than face-to-face, even in a post-internet era.

Luxembourg-class A-SS Supply Ship A specialist-built combination carrier designed to service the most distant colonies, where no corporation would even dare set foot, the Luxembourg-class stands almost alone, save for the Ireland-class, in supplying Earth's most distant worlds. Intended specifically only for cargo, the Luxembourg-class was specially ordered from Axiom Shipyards to initially supplement the Kenya-class after their refit to include FTL. However, it was later selected as the only cargo ship with FTL capability.

Being a combination carrier allows the Luxembourg-class to carry both containers and bulk goods like HABs, grains, and ores. Given special logistical capability by its one 'Godlift' Shuttle, capable of lifting a staggering 2,000 tons from a planet with 1g of gravity and an Earth-like atmosphere.

Suffering from similar crew issues like the Kenya-class or Ireland-class, crews often smuggle onboard their own cargo for either sale on the black market or as a backdoor mail service to link families for cheap. Although not suffering as badly from morale issues, as crews are sourced from the same pools as Ireland-class ships, they do often leave port with crew members missing.
